Handling of rotor blades to inland vessels

The first of an overall of 30 rotor blades of Danish wind power station producer Vestas arrived in April at port of Brunsbüttel. They are belonging to a new generation of rotor blades with a length of 55 meters and 4 meters wide intended for a project in the USA where the blades will be assembled to a wind power station with a total diameter of 112 meters.

New built port of Mühlberg/Elbe accorded a key role to this transport. Service provider Glahr & Co. GmbH developed a flexible und reliable logistic plan for his customer in Lauchhammer with regard to inclusion of three transport modes road, rail and waterway. This is an important criteria for Vestas to supply their actual projects in USA and Australia by overseas transport reliable just-in-time.

To connect the inland production facility to seaport waterway Elbe plays a decisive role for this purpose. Inland waterway vessels are able to transport large quantities of cargo and are also cost efficient, environmentally friendly and reliable, more than just an alternative to road and rail transports. After initial transport by truck mobile cranes at Mühlberg port handled the large rotor blades first to a motor vessel and second to a combination of barges. Both units with 30 rotor blades arrived in time and safe to Brunsbüttel port where they were temporary stored for following overseas transport to America.

Public inland port of Mühlberg is located at river Elbe between Riesa and Torgau. It is owned by Elbekies GmbH. City of Mühlberg is operating the port.
