Numerous representatives of politics, industry and administration has been invited by Verein zur Förderung des Elbstromgebietes e.V. to a series of lectures and a panel discussion about present and future conditions of inland waterway Elbe. After introduction from Mr. Oliver Hermann, Mayor of Wittenberge, and Mr. Dr. Ing. Victor Stimming, president of IHK Potsdam, political developments in case of the river Elbe were presented by administrative dependants. The new built port of Wittenberge and the revitalization of the port of Mühlberg near the Brandenburg-Saxon border were identified as proceeding actions for the use of river Elbe as a route of transport till Dresden.

As shown by actual studies the quantity of transported goods is rising to year 2025. Free capacities in inland transportation compared with bottlenecks in road and railway transports indicates the expected situation. To get the future requirements fulfilled the federal ministry of transport, building and urban development claimed modernisation of inland waterway infrastructure as a main premise. Linking up the different modes of transport in the frame of the national port concept and deepening the seaward part of river Elbe should therefore stay in focus.

The Elbe can be an useful option for cargo transportation. From the sight of a consignor some requirements determine the success of inland waterway transportation:

·        Available freight space

·        Necessary port infrastructure

·        Adequate transport good and constant demand of shipping

·        Efficiency compared to other shipping methods

For the planning of the supply chain one effort into inland waterway Elbe was named at several times. A customer related execution of inland transports is based on a reliable depth of the fairway over the whole year. A minimal depth of the fairway by 1,60 m followed by continuing progress of the waterway construction were considered as necessary for efficient inland transportation on the river Elbe.
