New container vessel for river Elbe

A new container vessel has been presented to the public in Magdeburg.

At 83 meters length and 9.50 meters width the barge can carry more than 100 standard box container. This is twice as much as usual ships are able to load as stated by Magdeburger Hafen GmbH.

The barge named “Franc” is a so-called lighter ship built at dockyard Tritonwerft in Duisburg. Conventional types of those barges have no driving unit in general and were pushed or drawn by pushing boats. Instead of them “Franc” is provided with a 550 hp engine. According to a statement by the port authority constructing engineers promise better manoeuvrability what is to increase safety.

The new container barge is intended to be part of the fleet for Elbe Container Line operated by Deutsche Binnenreederei.
